The Anti-Vision: Why Knowing What You Don’t Want is Just as Powerful
Earlier this week, I talked about visualization and how it can help you create a roadmap for achieving your goals. But what about your anti-vision? What about the things you don't want to happen?
Identifying what you don't want can be just as powerful as defining what you want to achieve. Why? Because it keeps you focused, intentional, aligned and aware.
It helps you set boundaries, avoid burnout, and keep you away from distractions that pull you away from your goals.
For the longest time, my anti-vision included me not working another 9-5 job. I knew that if I went back to being employed, I'd feel like I lost the thing I was trying to build.
The anti-vision you create helps you filter your decisions. It helps to ensure that your actions and commitments are in alignment with what you want.
Here's how you can create your anti-vision:
Reflect on Past Challenges: Think about the times you felt stressed or out of alignment. What was the cause for those feelings? (Example: Micromanaging, constant meetings, working with clients who exhaust you, etc.)
Get Specific: Write down those scenarios, habits, or situations you want to avoid. Be as detailed and specific as possible. (Example: I don't want to work 12-hour days, etc.)
Turn it Into Boundaries: Use what you've written down as boundaries. For example, if one of your scenarios included not working 12-hour days, then your boundary could include working only a certain number of hours a day or making sure to include strict breaks, etc.
