The Energy Audit: Where Are You Spending Your Time?
If you're feeling exhausted at the end of your day and feel like you haven't accomplished much, you may need to assess how your current activities are affecting your energy.
In a previous post, I talked about doing a Time Audit. This was to identify how you're spending your time and to determine what tasks you should prioritize.
An Energy Audit helps you identify which tasks, habits and interactions leave you energized or drains your energy.
When I did this exercise myself, I was able to align my day with my natural energy patterns so I wouldn't burnout.
Here's how it works:
Step 1: Track your activities and energy levels for a period of time. I recommend doing it for at least 3 days. Write down everything you do in 30 minute or hourly increments. Next to each activity, note how it made you feel: Energized, Neutral or Drained
Step 2: Identify Energy Patterns. Review your notes and look for trends. Where do you feel most energized? Morning, Afternoon, etc. What types of activities boost your energy? What consistently drains you?
Step 3: Adjust your Schedule. Once you understand your energy levels, start optimizing your day. Prioritize high-energy tasks and delegate draining tasks. Make sure you schedule in breaks or restorative activities after tasks that drain you so you can recover.
An Energy Audit isn't about doing more, but doing what matters most when you're at your best. This is a way to create balance and fulfillment in your day.
What’s one energy-draining task you can delegate or eliminate this week?
