The Power of Listening as a Leader

As a leader, listening isn't just about hearing words - it's also about understanding the emotions, motivations and needs behind them.

Active listening helps to create trust, strengthens relationships and encourages innovation.

And it's not always about having answers.

It's about asking the right questions and creating a space for others to share.

To practice being a better listener as a leader:

  • Practice active listening by being present: Focus entirely on the speaker. Put away distractions and resist the urge to plan your response while they are talking.

  • Ask open-ended questions: Seek understanding by asking questions to dive deeper into the topic. There's always more than what's being said on the surface level.

  • Summarize and reflect: At the end of the conversation, summarize what you've heard to make sure you've understood correctly.

  • Embrace silence: Pause after someone speaks. It allows space for the other person to elaborate and shows you're not rushing the conversation.

  • Listen to what's beyond the words: Pay attention to their body language, tone, and emotional cues to fully understand the message.

Reflect:

What's one way listening has strengthened your leadership or improved a relationship?
