Practicing Vulnerability as a Leader
"Leadership is everyone's business."
Leaders are often expected to project strength, confidence and certainty.
But vulnerability is emerging as one of the most powerful traits a leader can possess.
By opening up about personal challenges, uncertainties, and even failures, leaders can create an environment of trust and authenticity.
Here are 4 steps to help you embrace and practice vulnerability as a leader:
Share your story. Stories make you relatable and show that growth is a shared experience, not something only they are working on.
Ask for feedback and take action on it. Invite feedback from your team. Ask about your leadership style, decisions or processes.
Admit when you don't know the answer. Admitting that you do not know the answer helps by focusing on collaborative problem-solving. We're often afflicted with thinking we need to know all of the answers. This helps create a culture of asking for help and brainstorming without judgment.
Own your mistakes without excuses. When things go wrong, take responsibility and focus on how to move forward. Your willingness to admit your mistakes helps set the tone for accountability across the team.
